: NA political consultant Shaftan being investigated

: NORTH ARLINGTON — The state Attorney General’s office is investigating political consultant Rick Shaftan for possible voter fraud during North Arlington’s 2003 election. 

: Bergen County Superintendent of Elections Patricia DiConstanzo referred the case to the state after failing to receive a domicile from Shaftan.

: “He never filled it out, so now it’s referred to the Attorney General’s office; they will review it and give me direction,” said DiConstanzo. “My job is to make sure you vote in the town you live in. You can’t vote where you don’t live.”

: The investigation began in October when GOP candidate for North Arlington Council Brian Fitzhenry spotted Shaftan’s name on a list of new registrants. “I’m not a detective, but I’m not stupid. I suspected that he wasn’t living there [in the borough],” said Fitzhenry, who was defeated in the election. “I thought just in case I only lose by one vote … I don’t mind losing, but I wanted a level playing field.”

: Fitzhenry said he believed Shaftan lived in Sparta, where he ran his business. Shaftan used the address of Carey Ann Rosenblatt, a Democratic councilwomen he helped elect and later married.

: Shaftan said he has no intentions of filling out the domicile. “It’s ridiculous. I’m not going to fill it out. It’s a ridiculous five-page questionnaire … I don’t have time to fill out this stupid questionnaire,” said Shaftan, who said he had three houses at the time. “The [Fitzhenry] letter is designed to bust my b***s. They [the North Arlington GOP] hate me, and they hate my wife. They only question is who they hate more.”

: Shaftan worked on the Democratic campaigns in North Arlington in 2002 and 2003. 

: DiConstanzo couldn’t say what would happen if Shaftan is found guilty of voter fraud. Shaftan said all it means is one less vote for George Bush.
