Death of Roosevelt Stadium. A thriving, usable, historic site and an Icon of Union City. As a tribute to one of our greatest presidents and as part of his WPA Plan, Roosevelt Stadium was constructed in 1935 and gave people hope for the future. After 67 years of its useful existence It's own future is now destined for destruction t make way for a new high school. The Lenape Indian habitation thrived in this area of near by Hackensack, NJ from as early as recorded time and through the age of modernization. Native projectile points were uncovered under the original construction of the Stadium. This is proof that there may be artifacts and remains of their history and culture yet to be discovered. This Art Deco design Stadium in Union City, NJ has been opinioned and documented as a Historic Preservation site, ID# 4211 under the NJDEP Historic Preservation Plan, it needs the full protection of our Federal law not just a catalog number? Further more, Green Acres Funds were used to renovate this historic stadium in 1985 to also establish it under the National Parks heading. Mayor Brian Stack and some other individuals in Union City government think that this stadium and other historic sites in this city should be torn down in the name of progress. Brian Stack is going against his own city ordinances; he passed a Union City Historical Preservation Act when he first obtained his mayors position. The majority of the people of Union City and sounding areas also feel that progress should not be a reason to get rid of our past. There is only one other stadium in the country bearing the name Roosevelt Stadium and built as a tribute to Franklin Roosevelt. This other Stadium is in Hawaii. This is one more reason why the historical value of this stadium is priceless! This stadium rich in history, design and usefulness is being destroyed. Why? When there are other alternatives. Preserve, protect and renovate. Rebuild our schools and build new schools in areas where there is no loss of history. Schools are a necessity and the education of our children is our hope for the future, but we can not destroy or forget our past because without it out future is grim! We as a society must protect our precious treasures. This is only the beginning of Brian Stack’s plans, How many other landmarks and historic sites will be torn down before the people of (Hudson County and specifically Union City) wake up and do something to stop these horrible acts? I call to the people of Union City, please help, by not letting this treasure be torn down. Brian Stack, it is not to late, enforce your Historic Preservation Acts NOW! Save ROOSEVELT STADIUM stadium. http://www.preservationnj.org/ten_most/ten_most_property_detail.asp?COUNTY=Hudson%20County&PropID=112
