JERSEY CITY, NJ - This Friday, February 4, 2005, Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, The Municipal Council, The Department of Health & Human Services, and The Division of Cultural Affairs will present Jersey City's first Chinese New Year celebration, the year of the rooster, at City Hall's Council Chambers, 280 Grove Street, at 5:30pm.
The Lunar New Year has been expanded to include other Asian communities that celebrate the New Year, such as: Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Burma, Laos and also Chinese speaking communities from Philippines, Indonesia, India, Singapore, and Malaysia. This celebration will include ancient rituals and traditions that can be traced back thousands of years, involving hopes for longevity, wealth, peace, wisdom, and righteousness. In keeping with New Year traditions, family members gather together in an atmosphere of warmth and friendliness to welcome another year filled with good luck and happiness.
The Asian Unity Association, who are sponsored by The International Institute of New Jersey, will be providing ethnic dance performances during the celebration. Featured performances will include the historical ethnic Lion and Dragon Dance. The dancers will be in brightly colored costumes with lion and dragon heads. The dance is believed to ward off evil spirits for the following year. Refreshments and traditional Asian food will also be served.
