"Mayor Cunningham to Celebrate Dominican Independence"
Country is Marking 159 Years of Independence

JERSEY CITY - Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham will celebrate the 159th Anniversary of the Dominican Republic during a 10 a.m. ceremony on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004 in City Hall Council Chambers, 280 Grove Street.

The ceremony, which will last from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., will feature students performing traditional Dominican music and dance, as well as skits from the Caribbean island country. Students from School 5, School 23, School 3, and Our Lady of Czestochowa will attend the ceremony and participate in the festivities marking the country's independence which falls two days later on February 27.

In addition to the music and dance, the children will display a 40-foot long Dominican flag in the Council Chambers. The flag was created by students at OLC for a ceremony this summer that also honored the Dominican Republic. The Mayor will also raise the Dominican flag outside of City Hall.

"It is great to see the young people taking part in events that are both cultural and historical," Mayor Cunningham said. "As we celebrate the independence of countries so connected to our culture, we should encourage all involvement from all parts of our society."////
