At 11.9 miles are (L) the high towers of the New Jersey BELL TELEPHONE Co. EXPERIMENTAL STATION, the proving ground for all radio developments made by the Bell Laboratories, the central research unit of the Nation-wide Bell System. The station was established in 1926 as an experimental broadcasting unit, and in 1927 the first wired television program in the world was successfully transmitted from it. As early as 1928 experiments were begun in airplane-to-ground radio telephony that have resulted in the widespread commercial and private use of this type of communication. Among other inventions perfected here is the single pole antenna used by many of the major broadcasting companies.
