The GREEN HOMESTEAD (private), a low rambling, shingled structure
painted white, built c. 1735 by Dr. Jacob Green, has five half-windows
under the eaves. In addition to his duties as pastor, teacher, and physician,
the doctor found time to operate gristmills and to produce a fine grade of
rye whisky at a Troy Hills distillery. His son Ashbel limited himself to
theology and, during the Revolution, soldiering. Ashbel was a favorite of
Washington, who attended his wedding bringing a silver service, now
preserved in the homestead, as a gift. As president of Princeton University
(1813-1823), Ashbel Green became known as a theologian and scholar.
The Hanover property is owned by his great-great-grandson, Ashbel III.
Whippany River, 11 miles, is crossed by a concrete bridge just below its
confluence with Black Brook.
