HARRISON, 26.6 miles (130 alt., 15,600 pop.), an outgrowth of industrial Newark, is probably the only town of its size in the country that has
no motion-picture theater. No ordinance prevents the establishment of a
movie, but a $10,000 license fee does. A townsman reports that if any
enterprising manager has $10,000 "he ain't came across yet."
Harrison is a machine shop. On the Passaic meadows to the east and
south have been raised, among others, the gigantic plants of Crucible
Steel, Otis Elevator, Worthington Pump, R.C.A. Radiotron, and Public
Service Electric and Gas companies. Built for utilitarian purposes, Harrison has little decoration.
Right on Harrison Ave. (Newark Turnpike) and across Bridge St.
bridge over the Passaic River to the junction with McCarter Highway
(State 21), 27.2 miles; L. on McCarter Highway.
