Tour 16
From the Rural to the Industrial

(Hillburn, N. Y.) – Saddle River–North Arlington–Newark–Junction with US 22 ; State 2 and State 21.
New York Line to junction with US 22, 29.1 miles.
The Erie R.R. parallels the route between the New York Line and Hohokus.
Hotels in the larger towns. Lunchrooms and tourist accommodations at others.
Three- and four-lane concrete roadbed.

Crossing the New York State Line on the slope of the Ramapo Mountains, State 2 runs south, by-passing towns and traversing a dairying and truck-farming section. Old houses and churches show the influence of early Dutch settlers. The southern section of the route enters the industrial belt of northern New Jersey.

State 2 crosses the New York State Line 0.7 miles south of Hillburn, N. Y. The Ramapo Mts. shelter the sparsely distributed homes of the Jackson Whites (see Tour 9A).

The road descends the ridge into the narrow Ramapo Valley with dwindling Ramapo River at the nadir, and then rises on the foothills about 200 feet above the stream.

At 1.2 miles is the junction with US 202 (see Tour 4).
