JERSEYVILLE, 12 miles (50 alt., 40 pop.), a small hamlet known until
1854 as Green Grove, is in the midst of almost denuded timberland.
The sandy, flat country west of Jerseyville, where farmers raise good
crops of corn and potatoes, is drained by many small streams flowing
south to the Manasquan River. Ahead is the first view of the spires of
Freehold, rising above the great trees of its wide streets. Farmhouses give
way to suburban homes as the road crosses Debois Creek and the Pennsylvania R.R. tracks on a high bridge.
