State 33 runs west across the State between the ocean shore and Delaware River. It traverses a belt of sandy soil with scrub growth and thin settlement, then the rolling hill country and prosperous farmlands of Monmouth, the State's leading potato area, and scene of the Battle of Monmouth. At the western end are Trenton with its industrial and suburban district, and a number of small villages dating from the early Quaker settlements.
