MERCERVILLE, 39 miles (90 alt., 164 pop.), clings to its rural character
despite its proximity to Trenton. The settlement was once known as Sand-
town and later as Five Roads. The present name honors Gen. Hugh Mercer, fatally wounded in the Battle of Princeton.
West of Mercerville, State 33 passes suburban homes whose residents
are employed chiefly in Trenton industries.
At 40.8 miles (R) are the NEW JERSEY STATE FAIR GROUNDS with a long
grandstand, race track, pens for displaying animals, and buildings forother exhibits of the State Fair, held annually during the last week in
September.
At the fair grounds State 33 swings L. following Greenwood Ave.
Right from Greenwood Ave. on Clay St. to Stockton St.; R. on Stockton
St. to corner of E. State St. at the City Hall.
