NEPTUNE CITY, 26.5 miles (30 alt., 2,258 pop.), is an ocean resort
town. Many of its residents, including a large proportion of Negroes, serve
summer vacationers in the hotels and boarding houses of Asbury Park and
Ocean Grove. There are tourist camps along the highway. Many houses
lack paint, or have been painted in Joseph's-coat patterns as the owners
found time to wield the brush. A number of dwellings stand on brick
piers or wooden posts, since the ground is little above tide level. Fifty
years ago the town became famous for its shore dinners and clambakes. It
now maintains a pajama factory and an ice plant.
The City of Newark has a FRESH AIR CHILDREN'S CAMP at 82 Ridge
Ave. (open 7 a.m.-9 p.m. daily), with living quarters, playrooms, and playgrounds for a large number of children on brief vacations.
