ABSECON, 6.8 miles (30 alt., 5,158 pop.), is an old village named from
Absegami (Indian, place of the swans). Many of the residents earn their
living in Atlantic City, catering to the needs of its year-round influx of
visitors. Fishermen, meadow farmers, and guides live in the community.
The village was a stopping point for travelers on horses and in stages
long before the Revolution. It was a two-day stage trip from Absecon to
Camden, at a tariff of three halfpence a mile.
In Absecon, at 7.4 miles, is the junction with US 9 (see Tour 18).
Northward the route traverses scrub-oak country, with few villages and
scant population supported by the sandy soil.
