Left on 12th St. is HAMMONTON, 1.2 miles (100 alt., 7,656 pop.), busy center
of a fruit-farming area. It is a truck- and rail-shipping point with small industries
and a flourishing cooperative farm-marketing organization. On West End Ave. is a
wholesale FRUIT MARKET with cooperative auctions held twice a week under the
Italians among the fruit farmers and shippers stage an annual street carnival on
July 16 in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with a statue borne in a religious
big trees. Sales here have exceeded $1,000,000 a year.

opening of homemade wine are parts of the celebration, which attracts thousands of
visitors.
The town was named for John Hammond Coffin, who owned a glassworks here
a century ago.
Northwest of the Hammonton junction US 30 passes farther into the
rich fruit region. Peach orchards are plentiful here. Masses of pink and
white blossoms are the center of Blossom Time festivities that draw thousands of spectators.
