STRATFORD, 47.6 miles (90 alt.), is the seat of the old WHITE HORSE
HOTEL (L), former stage stop, post office, and town hall, which gave
its name to the White Horse Pike. The original sign, a plain wooden piece
depicting a white horse, still swings in the breeze. Since the white frame
building was erected in the eighteenth century, it has been used continuously as a hotel, run by the same family. A spacious veranda runs across
the front. Low ceilings, wide solid doors, small square windows with many
panes, and part of the original floor remain, much as they were a century
ago.
The highway runs through a fertile land of apple orchards, with an old-fashioned CIDER MILL (L) at 48.3 miles.
