HACKETTSTOWN, 52.5 miles (560 alt., 3,038 pop.), a quiet, clean
little town, is situated in the Musconetcong Valley between Schooleys and
Scotts Mts. Originally called Helm's Mills or Musconetcong, it became
known as Hackettstown about the middle of the eighteenth century after
Samuel Hackett, largest landowner in the district, leaped to popularity by
setting up free and plentiful drinks at the christening of a new hotel.
On Church St. (L) is the CENTENARY COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE, a
Methodist Episcopal school for girls. It was erected in 1869 and 1874 by
the Newark M. E. Conference at a cost of $200,000, and, after a fire that
destroyed the property in October, 1899, was rebuilt with an additional
$300,000.
Mounting the shoulder of UPPER POHATCONG MT., the road rises
and falls through a knobby region where the soil is jet black, glistening
like soft, rich velvet. Onions, celery, and lettuce are grown here.
The descent into the Pequest Valley begins at 55.3 miles Straight ahead,
over the long sweep of fields, is JENNY JUMP MT.
