Right on this road is MOUNTAIN LAKES, 1.1 miles (420 alt., 2,132 pop.), a
late nineteenth-century real-estate development that really developed. Today it is a
quiet, dignified community spread out in well-built homes around eight artificial
lakes.
LAKE ARROWHEAD, 29.9 miles (R), is in a somewhat lower region.
Perched on a hill W. of the entrance to the lake is (R) a WHITE FRAME
HOUSE with green shutters, in an adaptation of a Colonial style of archi-
tecture. It was built in 1931 by Claude A. Miller, who wrote a book about
his home, Early American House And The Fun We Had Building It.
DENVILLE, 30.6 miles (540 alt., 2,120 pop.), a Lackawanna R.R. junction, is a thriving little community whose wide main street and busy commercial center give it the appearance of a larger town. At its southwestern
tip is INDIAN LAKE, a popular summer resort, and in summer the village's population jumps to more than 10,000. Denville has a public works
system that includes a municipally owned water works and nine lake playgrounds.
Far Off US 46 and just west of Denville is BALD HILL (R) not bald
at all, but thick with trees and studded with a gleaming water tank.
The road mounts the lower shoulder of SNAKE HILL (L).
At 32.2 miles is the junction with an improved road.
