At the junction is the old KINGSTON FLOUR MILL (L), an old frame
building, where water power is still used in part. Behind the mill is the
dam that forms CARNEGIE LAKE (L), a gift of Andrew Carnegie to
Princeton University in 1906. The river has been dredged and widened
for 3 1/2 miles, providing a straight course for university crews. Across the
lake are the gray stone buildings of ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE, a Roman
Catholic institution.
At 31.8 miles is (L) the CASTLE HOWARD FARM (garden open to visitors), dating back to 1685. One of its early owners, Captain Howard, a
retired British army officer, was at the time of his death in 1776 sympathetic to the Revolution. His widow married another British officer and
had to flee from the farm after the Battle of Princeton, leaving it in the
care of President Witherspoon of Princeton College, to avoid confiscation.
The family of Princeton's famous athlete, the late Hobart (Hoby) Baker,
now the owner.
At 32.1 miles are the grounds and buildings (R) of the former PRINCETON PREPARATORY SCHOOL for boys, closed in 1936 for lack of support.
