Tour 8
The King's Highway

Elizabeth-New Brunswick-Princeton; State 27.
Elizabeth to Princeton, 33.7 miles.
Paralleled by Pennsylvania R.R. throughout.
Adequate accommodations at close intervals.
Modern concrete roadbed, mostly three lanes wide.

State 27, part of the original Lincoln Highway, runs southwest across the State, through the fringe of the metropolitan industrial and residential area and touching the State's two great university centers. The southern part traverses somewhat rolling agricultural country, spotted with woods, streams, and an occasional lake or pond. Nearly 300 years ago the route was known as the Dutch Trail, the path of Dutch travelers from the Hudson to the Delaware. Later it became the Great Road and still later, the King's Highway.

ELIZABETH, 0 m. (70 alt., 114,589 pop.) (see ELIZABETH).

Points of Interest. First Presbyterian Church, Union County Courthouse Annex (museum), Carteret Arms, Scott Park, Boudinot House, Singer Sewing Machine Plant, and others.

State 27, following S. Elmora Ave., branches southwest from State 28 (see Tour 17) on Rahway Ave.

At 0.3 miles is WARINANCO PARK (R), part of the large Union County Park System, with green-bordered drives and broad, sunny lawns. The park was named for one of three chiefs of the Lenni Lenape Indians, who signed the original deed for what is now Union County. It has athletic fields, a concrete stadium, and a running track. A lake provides fishing, boating, skating, and ice hockey. On the picnic grounds are fireplaces. Dog-sled races take place annually when snowfall permits. A sunrise service is held in the park on Easter Sunday.

ROSELLE, 1.9 miles (70 alt., 13,021 pop.) (see Tour 17), is skirted on its southern border (R).

LINDEN, 2.4 miles (25 alt., 21,206 pop.) (see Tour 1), is L.

At 2.8 miles (R) is the SUNNYFIFLD GOLF COURSE (18 holes; greens fee 50 cents; Sat., Sun., and holidays $1).

The highway here retains most of its line of old elms and maples. Behind them are attractive homes.
