HIGHLAND PARK, 15.8 miles (loo alt., 8,691 pop.), a suburb of New
Brunswick, is divided by Raritan River from that city. At the NON-METALLIC STATION (not open) of the United States Bureau of Mines,
cor. Cleveland and Madison Aves., experiments are conducted in the
origins of steel embrittlement, the chief cause of boiler explosions.
On the townsite was an Indian village in 1675, when the place was
known as Raritan Falls from a small cascade.
At 16.5 miles, the eastern end of Albany St. Bridge across the Raritan
River, is the junction (R) with State S 28 (see Tour 13). State 27 and
State S 28 are united for 0.4 miles.
