Tour 9a
The Wanaque Reservoir and The Kanouse Mountain – Kanouse Mountain

South of West Milford the road begins the descent of the Kanouse alley, a 7-mile stretch through wild, high wooded country dominated by BEARFORT MT. (R) and KANOUSE MT. (L). This is a district of apple orchards, of lone farmhouses in softly rolling fields at the foot of steep mountains, and of thin white fingers of birch along the road. It is good hunting country; the woods are full of pheasant, rabbit, partridge, and deer, plus a few foxes and bobcats. The occasional large black birds roosting somberly in the trees are not buzzards but turkeys, from nearby breeding farms.

IDYLEASE INN, a big three-story yellow frame building at 26.4 miles. (L), is a sanitarium for tubercular patients. It was formerly a hotel.

At 27 miles. is the junction with State 23, 0.7 miles south of Newfoundland (see Tour 9).
