CEDAR GROVE, 8.1 miles (300 alt., 5,092 pop.), is a suburban village
whose population includes the 2,500 patients and attendants at Overbrook
Hospital.
State 23 underpasses the Erie R.R. tracks at 8.2 miles, through a scraggly
cottage-scattered district dominated by the sharp brow of WATCHUNG
MT. (L). A long vertical scar of brown earth streaked into the green-gray ridge at 8.5 miles is a MOTORCYCLE STUNT PATH, where cycling addicts risk their necks.
At 9.6 miles, where the road rises and the land R. falls sharply away, is
the view of the southeastern edge of PASSAIC VALLEY studded with
smokestacks and workers' homes, and the high hills of West Paterson
to the E.
At 9.7 miles is the junction with a macadam road.
