MOUNTAIN VIEW, 14.4 miles (170 alt., 1,684 pop.), is an outspread
little residential community and summer resort on the Pequannock River.
The old brown frame MOUNTAIN VIEW HOTEL (R) does not hide its
private business; at midday red pillows and pale blue mattresses are stuffed
out on the window sills to air above the main highway. Rising on the
town's outskirts (L) is a STEEL TOWER that looks very much like a diagram of heart action in the early stages of cardiac mitosis; it is a transmit-
ter for WABC.
At 14.6 miles; is the junction with US 202 (see Tour 4). State 23 and US
202 are united for 2.3 miles north of Mountain View.
Cedars line the highway as it splits into two two-lane avenues and
climbs to the north. At 16.6 m., at the crest of a long rise in the road, is
the sudden view of the hills above Packanack Lake and, far N., the foothills of the Ramapos.
At 17.3 miles, at a large traffic circle, State 23 branches (L) from US 202.
From the highway bridge above the Pequannock River, at 17.7 miles is
a glimpse of the turf-covered aqueduct running parallel to the river (R)
from the Pequannock Reservoir to Newark.
