Northwest to High Point – Verona

State 23 skirts the eastern fringe of VERONA (360 alt., 7,160 pop.), in the valley between the First and Second Watchungs. Sparse thickets are clumped along the road (R) ; L. are the "model homes" of the borough – trim little white, green-shuttered, frame dwellings of the so-called Colonial style. The Verona area was owned by Caleb Hetfield, a Tory who took no chances on the outcome of the struggle and sold his holdings before the Revolutionaries had the opportunity to confiscate them. They later became the property of Christian Bone, a Hessian who deserted German Gorge to fight for the American uprising.

Spread out at the foot of the wooded escarpment at 8.3 miles (L) are the buildings of OVERBROOK HOSPITAL, the Essex County institution for the of the mentally diseased.
