Enter stage left the NYC police.

Story goes that then NYC Mayor Ed Koch was brought in for the final call. Seems that the pretty Miss insisted on pressing charges. Koch agreed with her that no pity should be wasted on Gerry, but think of his wife and the people of Jersey City. They've got to put up with the guy every day. Do you want that they should have to bear even yet more suffering. Staggered at the thought of a daily dose of McCann, she agreed to just forget about the whole thing.

It ended with Gerry being treated to a supervised slumber and a ride home the next day.
