From The Auditor, the Star Ledger . . . Wildest Card Glenn Cunningham , the mayor of Jersey City and soon to become a state senator, walks away with this one. He won a decisive victory in this year's Senate primary against the Hudson County Democratic machine, led by U.S. Rep. Robert Menendez and Sen. Bernard Kenny. It was by far the bitterest fight of the year, and feelings remain raw on both sides. "They compared me to a pig, and accused me of lying," Cunningham says. "My wife cried when she saw their mailings. She still won't go to the mailbox." But it was a two-way fight. A local newspaper allied with Cunningham, the Urban Times News, struck many low blows against his enemies -- accusing them not just of fraud and extortion, but of drinking too much and cheating on their wives. One column dredged up the suicide of a prominent Democrat's father two decades ago. "I do not write for them, and I don't tell them what to print," Cunningham says. But the paper's publisher, Bobby Jackson, is a close ally who served as one of three trustees on the mayor's inaugural committee, and he has raised funds for the mayor. Kenny and Menendez are beyond bitter. So how will Cunningham and Kenny get along in the Democratic caucus? How will the governor make any appointments from Hudson County when both these men have veto power through senatorial courtesy? Stay tuned. "I don't see peace in our time between these two camps," says one top Democrat. Cunningham, a former federal marshal, promises to try. "I don't want to sound corny, but I start off in the morning praying for my enemies. Don't get me wrong, I don't want them to win the lottery. But we're in office to help people. I haven't forgotten that, and these other people have." . . .
