Even after working for the City for a couple of years I was surprised when a supplier told me (with an innocent look on his face, yet) that before he put in a bid, he needed to know how much of a commission he had to figger in for me!

: : Thomas Gangemi. The mayor scheduled a stop to Genoa, Italy in 1963 to accompany a man named Christopher Columbus back to Jersey City to take part in Columbus Day festivities. As a formality, the type of which we all go through, Gangemi was asked to prove his citizenship, couldn't, and naturally had to resign his post. (He was found to be a lawful citizen of Calabria, Italy. He later became a naturalized US citizen.) Kind of a shame, as he was the city's pioneer mayor elected under the Faulkner Act, which changed the form of government from mayor-commissioner to mayor-council. Thus did he become the city's first mayor directly elected by the people and de-elected by INS.
