: I can go you one better.  I just started working at the city, but I'm still like running a side business on the weekend.  This guy looks me up and says that he wants me to do a job for him.  I talk to the guy and tell him that I don't think that he needs any work done.  He insists that he does.  I tell him that he don't, that he's just throwing his money away.  For another couple of minutes we go through this silly dance of him trying to convince me that he needs the work done and me telling him that he don't when he finally comes out with it.  He wants to hand me money to get an introduction to somebody.  I just tell him to hold on to the dough and just go to an open house or something.

: : : Thomas Gangemi. The mayor scheduled a stop to Genoa, Italy in 1963 to accompany a man named Christopher Columbus back to Jersey City to take part in Columbus Day festivities. As a formality, the type of which we all go through, Gangemi was asked to prove his citizenship, couldn't, and naturally had to resign his post. (He was found to be a lawful citizen of Calabria, Italy. He later became a naturalized US citizen.) Kind of a shame, as he was the city's pioneer mayor elected under the Faulkner Act, which changed the form of government from mayor-commissioner to mayor-council. Thus did he become the city's first mayor directly elected by the people and de-elected by INS.
