A Roller Coaster Ride Through Suburbs, – West Orange

WEST ORANGE, 0 mile (190 alt., 24,327 pop.) (see WEST ORANGE).

Point of Interest: Thomas A. Edison Plant.

State 10 runs west from West Orange on Mt. Pleasant Ave., up the steep grade of First Orange Mt. The ascent is made on sharp curves. Trees hide suburban homes L., but a fine view over the Oranges and Newark opens R. Beyond the ridge of the Palisades appear the projecting fingers of New York skyscrapers. In the early evening the city lights spread like a twinkling blanket on the plain below.

At 1.3 miles is the junction with Prospect Ave. on the top of the mountain. Right on this concrete road to Eagle Rock Ave.; R. on Eagle Rock. Ave. to EAGLE ROCK RESERVATION, 1.6 miles (see Tour 9).

At Prospect Ave. is a SWEDISH RESTAURANT (R) that serves smorgasbord.

State 10 descends the ridge, climbs Second Orange Mt. at the farthest fairways (L) of the ESSEX COUNTY COUNTRY CLUB (private), and slopes down into a valley only to climb again to the third and lowest ridge of the chain of hills. Here, over a broad expanse of meadows and pastures, are scattered farms and isolated dwellings.
