Tour 22
South Amboy–Red Bank–Point Pleasant–Lakewood; State 35
Laurelton

LAURELTON, 40.8 miles (10 alt., 350 pop.), is at the traffic circle junction with State 34 (see Tour 21) and State 40 (see Tour 27). Once called Metedeconk (from "Mittig-conck," Indian, good thrifty and living timber), the town was later renamed Burrsville. It is a center for extensive poultry and egg farms.

Turning sharply R. from Laurelton the road winds northwest through evergreen forests and crosses the north branch of Metedeconk River. From this point, for 3 miles, are the grounds (L) of the LAKEWOOD ESTATE (private) of the late John D. Rockefeller. In places the estate borders the highway; at others a fringe of caretakers' and workmen's houses is outside the barbwire fence. There are two thickly wooded entrances in a tall hedge of fir trees.
