I'm not gonna try to play any angle about who you support or don't. That's for you to wrangle with. But about the sign issue....the only ones I ever took seriously as a "sign" of support for a candidate, were the ones placed inside a window, or attached to the outside of a building (obviously with the owners permission). Those show that the people living or working there actually support someone....not that some over zealous campaign worker came along and nailed one to their property. And isn't it time the council passed an ordinace against VERTICLE bumper stickers that wind up plastered all over the light poles? If you take the time, you can still find stickers for Wally and Marilyn, and others stuck high up on poles in obscure parts of town. After that carnival with 19 caidndates some years ago.... it took the Public Works guys months to clean up the mess. : You're certainly correct about that. And of course there's the corrolary of the theorem: : Fights for signs on poles I figger to be a general waste of time, money, and manpower. All I think that a sign on a pole signifies to Joe or Jane citizen is that an election is approaching. : My opinion is that signs in a neighborhood can have some effect. If the people putting up the signs are City or County workers, the neighbors just figger that's how the wind is blowing at either Grove Street or Newark Avenue. But, if the individual is someone respected on the block, I think that a sign will influence people. : Generally, I mention signs a lot here just because it's something objective. The signs either are there or they ain't there. The signs are in some particular place: on a pole, at a business address, or on someone's house. The sign is in one piece or it's vandalized. When I point out some instance, people can comment on the meaning, but not on whether the observation is true. : The Healy pull-down is another story. I only speak about politics to a couple of neighbors. One has a Manzo sign (a relative is a Manzo supporter) the other has no sign (hasn't made up his mind). I can only guess why the Healy signs are getting the heave-ho. Really, it's starting to look like the day after the election with Manzo having won! The Manzo signs are sticking and the Healy signs are falling! : By the way, I'm not working for Manzo. So, don't try to play that for an angle! : : : "SIGNS DON'T VOTE...PEOPLE VOTE" : : If you recall...when Schundler ran against Manzo.... despite the fact that Schundler had a good deal of signage around town, Manzo papered the city like a paper-hanger on a caffeine high. It didn't wins him even one ward. So let's wait and see who actually has a GOTV effort organized...then we can start predicting who will be the next occupant of the corner office at 280 Grove. : : : : : Up in the Heights here, about two weeks ago Healy signs got plastered on a bunch of houses. One after another, I see people pitching them in the garbage. Anybody have any idea what gives? : : : And this isn't vandalism -- as in the case of the Manzo signs. The homeowners are taking the signs down themselves and putting them in the trash. I only saw one that was defaced by a magic markered "X." As it was kept up in that sorry state for a week, my assumption is that the damage is intentionally inflicted by the person living there. : : : I only know a little about a single case. Seems that the twerp agreed to put the sign up in exchange for like a little favor. . . (To all concerned, remember, as we've been told, God works in strange ways (Gov. James E. uses the word "mysterious.")) After a little bit, the slink dumped the yellow sign. This might be the first case of a voter breaking a campaign promise made to a politician! : : : Manzo signs are holding their own after the little wave of spite. A few Smith and Carroll signs are out and about. I can't remember seeing any for the other hopefuls.
